MUSIC – Introduction
David’s has written music for the concert world, the theatre, for television and radio, and also songs and music specifically for children. For more detail and examples, please choose from the drop-down menu under MUSIC above.
David’s concert music spans orchestral, choral and vocal works, as well as much chamber music. Most of the concert works, including the four String Quartets and ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE, are published by Novello & Co, (Wise Music).
Novello publishes other Stoll music, including the children’s opera THE DRUMMER BOY OF WATERLOO, co-written with Megg Nicol. David also co-wrote the musical, LITTLE FIR TREE with Megg.
David has written for many production music libraries and he is currently working on an extensive collection of production music tracks for Wise Music, scored for a variety of ensembles, combining chamber, jazz and electronic instruments. You can hear a selection of excerpts here.
Every now and then, some of this music is chosen for remastering for commercial release in the MUSIC FOR LISTENERS series. Available collections include LAST BUS HOME with a jazz flavour, and MUSIC FOR LOST FILMS for brass ensembles.
David also writes incidental music and songs for the theatre; credits include the Royal Shakespeare Company, A&BC Theatre Company and several Youth Theatres. His opera FALSE RELATIONS was commissioned for the Arts’ Council’s Year of Opera and Music Theatre.
Another of David’s major projects is a series of electronic collections for download and streaming, produced with John Mercer under the artist name CHRONOMETER.
David has written extensively for children, including songs, stories, poems, music and lyrics for BBC Radio and Television. His download resources for primary schools include DICK OTTINGTON, a pantomime, co-written with Michael Hinton, and the CUCKOO ROCK songbook (to poems by Phil Bowen). His SEALSONGS collection is widely used in primary schools.
